Bath Lighting

The bathroom represents a significant, strictly functional area of the house and therefore we must give it special attention when planning to decorate, both in terms of the bathroom suite and the lighting fixtures. This space is one can be a room for relaxation, though it is also a functional space, and the moment we think about what lighting to use we have to think about all these things. Efficient lighting will allow us to carry out all the activities relating to these rooms without creating any discomfort.

Bathrooms are characterised, in general, as more restricted areas - they are not always the big, airey rooms we may hope for and, often, do not have natural light. As such, lighting becomes more important than usual. Lighting must be more intense than in the rest of our house, as compared with the needs of the room. Uniform light can be expressed through various bodies, selected according to the size of the bathroom. For a small bath uniform light can be obtained with the help of two bodies of lighting arranged on either side of the mirror, and for a large bath the light may be obtained by using a lightning body affixed to the ceiling, above huge mirrors.

Bathroom lighting can be added to the wall or ceiling, however, wherever the lighting comes from, it must be watertight so the steam from the bathroom would not affect it. If you want to bring a note of originality to your bathroom and to win some space, you can opt for ceilings with incorporated lights, like spotlights. Before thinking about the appearance and aesthetics of the lighting in your bathroom, you must first take into account how to protect users against electric shocks.

Another important aspect in choosing lighting fixtures represent problems that may arise through contact between a heated bulb and water vapour from the bath. Such inconvenience can be avoided if spot type lighting bodies are used. Which, in addition, offer safety and a modern bathroom aspect. These spots are available in a vast range of models and so you have an opportunity to choose exactly what fits your bathroom. The bathroom is an intimate area for us and even if it is used for certain activities it deserves to be equipped with special attention to details.

Bath lighting must meet three conditions: to be functional, aesthetic and to have a special ambiance. For the daily tasks (shaving, make up, etc.) you needed a strong light and for moments of relaxation, such as a bath in the tub, you need a discreet light. Also the bulbs that you use must provide the amount of light needed to properly light this room. It is indicated that you should use lighting fixtures directed down with special ornaments or decorative pieces which help in reshaping the bathroom and obtaining a special effect. Sources of lighting must be fixed and directed so to have an efficient light and to focus on dark areas or objects that you want to put in a special light. Also the light can be reflected by using mirrors if they are placed in strategic places and you can get better results when decorating the bathroom. It may also be supplemented by a lamp or lamps perched on the bathroom cabinet if the electrical system allows this. All these will help you to have a stronger light when needed, but also a dimmer light to create a romantic atmosphere.

Lighting for the bath come in two options: either those who are already incorporated in the furnishings, or those you buy separately. Choose a filament lamp bulb for a small cost, in a bright colour, similar to natural light. Choose a spotlight if you want something to consume less energy, but a bigger price than a bulb. And if you choose the neon light take into consideration the colder light and the higher price.

The mirrors in the bathroom should reflect as much natural light as possible, also, artificial ones, if placed in front of windows, will reflect the light giving the impression of a wider space.

The bathroom light must be clear, with controlled intensity and not bright. What ever lighting you choose, it must work with the furnishings, mirror and other decorative pieces placed in the bathroom. A classic style bathroom must have mirrors with elegant frames and shaded lighting bodies . For modern design choose mirrors without frames, spots placed strategically so that the light is not too bright.
